    Message from Coach Ian

    Hello parents and swimmers,

The Gator coaching staff would like to acknowledge the improvements we are seeing across the team. Your commitment to increasing your yardage, refining your skills, and working to implement better strategies in the water is making a difference.

Last week was the Gators’ first week of learning drills for each stroke. Remember: a drill done 98% correctly is still 100% wrong. The quality you continuously strive to implement during practice will greatly increase your chances of success in our future competitions.

The Gator coaching staff would also like to thank you for your positive attitude and your commitment to being on time, prepared to start practice, and coachable each day.

As we welcome you into Week 4 of practice, we will begin transitioning from learning drills to using those drills as tools to develop a better feel for the water. This week will focus on implementing the accumulation of skills and improving time management.

    Gators will:

  • Build set intensity
  • Find power in the water
  • Learn what distance they can manage successfully
  • Bring all skills together while maintaining a positive attitude
  • Gators will continue mirroring positive practice habits and building the grit necessary to feel confident in our future meets and in our relay teams.

This week in the Warm Springs / Fremont area, we are expecting generally mild spring conditions with daytime temperatures around the upper 60s to mid-70s and cooler mornings in the low 50s. There is also a possibility of some clouds and light showers later in the week. Being prepared for the weather is important because it can affect your energy levels and performance during both practice and meets.

Understanding how weather affects performance is important, and so is maintaining good nutrition and hydration. Eating a proper and balanced diet for your age, along with having appropriate snacks before and after practice, is essential. Please also watch your water intake and make sure you are staying hydrated to support muscle recovery and your ability to complete practice successfully.

As Week 4 begins, Gators will work to break team records this year. The coaching staff would love to see new top team times. For those student-athletes who have already begun completing their goal books, we will continue helping the rest of the team focus on improvements, including documenting their experiences throughout this swim season. I will send another message shortly with more information about this.

As we continue building the positive practice habits that define being a Warm Springs Gator, our small improvements—made consistently—will continue to strengthen our power, endurance, and ability to cover distance. This will build the strong foundation that allows our grit and positive attitude to achieve new standards and expectations.

Keep up the hard work, Gators.

We will be swimming against Treeview on May 16. Gators will be united, focused, and prepared while representing the Warm Springs Gators. Trust the work that you have already done, and continue encouraging, including, and supporting one another.

“Remember, it’s not the will to win that matters—everyone has that. It is the will to prepare to win that matters.”

    — Steve Prefontaine

    Gators will build strength.
